AI PRODUCT ENGINEER ADVANCED INDUSTRY ACCELERATOR

16 - 32 Weeks

Design, build, and deploy intelligent systems that power the next generation of digital products.

About This Programme

Over 16–32 weeks, this programme equips you with the technical, engineering, and collaborative skills to design scalable, reliable, and ethical AI-powered systems. Learn methodologies to harness AI effectively — understanding its limits as well as its potential — so you can build products that truly work in the real world. Learn online, your way with coaching, collaboration, and real-world mentored projects. Bring your own project or deploy with one of our 300+ industry partners.

Overview

AI Product Engineers are set to shape the future — not by letting AI take over, but by learning how to use it with skill and purpose. This postgraduate programme gives you the engineering mindset and technical expertise to design, test, and deliver intelligent systems that create measurable value.

You’ll learn how new architectures and patterns integrate AI models and APIs, to speed up development and transformation. Master collaboration practices that turn innovative ideas into scalable products. As you progress, you’ll gain the tools to evaluate AI’s role responsibly — ensuring performance, security, and sustainability are at the heart of your work.

Who This Programme Is For

Perfect for:

  • Mission Ready graduates in software, data, or UX seeking to advance into AI system design and engineering roles.
  • Software engineers and developers ready to move beyond basic integrations to building AI-powered products end-to-end.
  • Technical professionals and career shifters who want to deepen their practical AI skills and become confident, industry-ready engineers.

If you want to build intelligent systems, not just talk about them — this is your programme.

What You'll Learn

Phase 1 – AI-Enabled Collaboration and Productivity (6 weeks)

Build your engineering foundation, then master how to design, develop, and deliver software products where AI is a core component of the system.

You will gain the practical skills required to build, integrate, and deploy AI capabilities within real applications, developing the technical understanding needed to engineer intelligent products end-to-end.

  • Product and system design fundamentals for agentic and AI-enabled solutions.
  • Generative AI, APIs, and integration design patterns.
  • Vector databases and embeddings: data design, querying, and scaling.
  • Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): concepts, architecture, and implementation.
  • Local LM deployment: tuning, security, and efficient delivery.
  • Agentic AI: design, orchestration, and building functional AI agents.
  • Collaboration with AI tools: best practices and workflows for effective teamwork.
  • Product engineering process and cost management for scalability.

Before you can build AI products, you must know how to work effectively inside the teams that build them. This is the phase where you learn to work like an AI Product Engineer before you start building like one.

Phase 2 – AI Product Engineering (10 weeks)

Learn practical knowledge to design and build AI-enabled systems, including real-life considerations such as system performance and integration with other systems

  • AI Fundamentals for Engineers
  • RAG and Agentic AI
  • Performance engineering and MLOps
  • AI Governance and Enterprise Integration
  • Techniques to Future-proof AI Systems

Phase 3 – Mentored AI Project Experience (10 weeks)

Gain real life project experience with mentoring from an industry expert.  Work on an industry project or bring your own.

  • Introduction to project and stakeholders
  • Perform AI product design and implementation, weekly mentor meetings, performance checks
  • Project presentation

Phase 4 – Future-Proof Careers in the Age of AI (6 weeks)

Learn how to stay relevant and facilitate employment and career advancement in the age of AI when skills become obsolete quickly

  • Digital Careers in the Age of AI
  • Building an AI-Enhanced Personal Brand
  • AI-Powered Creation of Career Marketing Assets
  • Interviewing Success Strategy with AI
  • Content Strategy, Ethical AI Marketing & Job Acquisition

FAQ

What’s the best way to transition academic projects to real-world jobs?

Reframe them as prototypes of your thinking. That means:

  • Explain the context — what problem did you choose to solve, and why?
  • Show how you worked: research, decisions, iterations, outcomes
  • Reflect honestly: what would you do differently with a real client, real constraints, real feedback?

A well-presented student project that reveals how you think is often more valuable than a generic internship. Employers are looking for potential — and potential reveals itself in reflection.

If your academic project was theoretical, add one layer: talk to someone in the field, or redesign the solution based on a real-world dataset or user need. Suddenly, it’s not academic anymore. It’s applied.

Do I need to ‘start over’ financially to change careers into tech?

Not necessarily. But there’s often a short-term trade-off. You may step sideways or slightly down in salary — but the long-term trajectory is steeper. The key is to reduce the “valley of transition”:

  • Choose a pathway that builds on your existing experience.
Look for part-time or contract roles that let you prove yourself.
  • Don’t fixate on titles — focus on skills and outcomes.

According to the 2024 MBIE labour market update, digital roles in NZ have some of the fastest year-on-year salary growth. So while the pivot may feel like a step back, the runway ahead is long and promising.

Our Mission Advisors have helped a number of candidates work through how to make the accelerator work financially. It is best to book a one on one conversation to understand your options.

What is a mentored work experience?

Mentored work experiences are structured programmes where you engage in practical work activities under the guidance and supervision of experienced mentors. These experiences are designed to provide real-world exposure, skills development, and professional growth within a specific field or industry.

Mission Ready works with 300+ industry partners to provide mentored work experiences.

Participants work on actual projects or tasks that contribute to their understanding of the industry, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings. In addition to technical skills, mentored work experiences develop communication and teamwork skills that are so important in the modern work place.

Our facilitators match participants to mentors to provide you with valuable feedback, insights, and referrals.

The mentors, are experienced professionals who have agreed to provide guidance, feedback, and support. They help mentees navigate challenges, understand industry norms, and develop professionally.

These experiences often enable participants to connect with professionals in their field, expanding their professional network and opening doors to future job opportunities.

For many, these experiences can lead to employment opportunities within the host organisation or with others in the industry, based on the skills and relationships developed during the program.

Mentored work experiences are part of our Level 6 programmes.
